About us
Where technology and
flax heritage meet
Our mission
At BIOFIBIX, we make flax composites affordable. Flax offers an exceptional balance of performance, natural appeal, and sustainability, making it an ideal choice for advanced applications. Historically, challenges such as high cost, resin absorption, and moisture sensitivity have limited its widespread adoption. We have addressed these barriers, enabling you to integrate flax composites into your products and drive the transition toward sustainable material solutions.

Strategic partnerships with Vanacker Rumbeke and KU Leuven
Through BIOFIBIX, you’ll have one contact point covering flax cultivation, reinforcement production, and composite innovation.
Meet the founders
Vanacker Rumbeke - Belgium
Vanacker Rumbeke is a key partner and shareholder of BIOFIBIX, located in Belgium’s traditional flax cultivation area. The agricultural and production assets of Vanacker Rumbeke play a vital role in the success of BIOFIBIX.
Through the access and expertise of Vanacker, Biofibix will be uniquely positioned to source its fiber material more consistently, regardless of price volatility. Fibre quality can be ensured by combining harvests from multiple growing seasons and applying the expertise needed to create uniform blends. Hence, you can rely on more stable pricing as well as fiber quality.
Vanacker started flax operations in 1921, whereas Vanacker Rumbeke was incorporated in 1972. Together with contract workers, it cultivates around 4,000–5,000 tonnes of flax each year. Long fibres are supplied to the traditional textile industry. To valorise the shives, or the woody particles, the sister company Jopack was set up and serves the animal bedding market. Jopack now processes and distributes agricultural raw materials for bedding and feed, for all sorts of animals globally. Through BIOFIBIX, short flax fibres now have a high-value use in advanced composite materials.
KU Leuven - Belgium
BIOFIBIX is a spin-off company from KU Leuven, Belgium. The university remains a committed shareholder and long-term partner, supporting the continuous improvement of BIOFIBIX’s flax reinforcements.
The Composite Materials Group (CMG) in the Department of Materials Engineering at KU Leuven is one of the world’s recognised centres for composite materials research, with an academic staff of around 50 people.
BIOFIBIX’s scientific advisory board from KU Leuven includes:
- Prof. Aart Willem van Vuure, leading the bio-based and sustainable composites group
- Prof. Jan Ivens, leading the process and application development group
- Em. Prof. Ignaas Verpoest, founder of the composite materials group in 1982
With the support of KU Leuven’s scientific advisory board and advanced characterization equipment, the BIOFIBIX engineering team can assist you with:
- Advice on the use of flax in various composite transformation processes
- Engineering support for composite lay-up configuration and material selection
- Tailor-made fibre treatments for optimal fibre-matrix adhesion and impregnation
innovative flax reinforcements, development support, composite expertise
